Description:
The drop spindle is a primitive fiber-spinning tool that has been used for countless generations, and is still being used as a primary spinning tool throughout the world today. It has become very popular among current handspinners for spinning fibers such as, wool, cotton, angora, and dog hair. Drop spindles are very portable, economical, and very easy to use.

The objective of this course is to give the student the basic fundamentals of handspinning fibers using a drop spindle. After completion of the course the student will know how to:

  • tie a leader to the spindle
  • draft the fiber for easy spinning
  • join fibers ends together
  • spin different sizes of yarn
  • set in the twist and make a skein, and more…

    Materials Needed:

  • A bottom-whorl drop spindle
  • 3 oz of ready-to-spin fiber
  • A length of yarn used as a leader
