Do you have fiber that you would like to have handspun into quality yarn for your knitting, weaving, or other fiber projects? The Joy of Handspinning’s Custom Yarn Spinning Service will spin any amount of your wool, mohair, alpaca, llama, angora, silk, cashmere, and dog fiber, up to 5 lbs.

All fiber must be clean – free of dirt, oil, lanolin, and vegetation. Please refer to “How to Wash Your Fleece” for cleaning instructions.

Depending on the complexity of the order, we should be able to complete your order in 2 weeks. We will inform you by email or phone, if there are any delays.

SAMPLES

The types of yarn we are able to handspin are bulky, worsted, sport and fingering weight – singles, 2 ply, or 3 ply.

We suggest that you send a sample of yarn (if available) that resembles the type of yarn you desire. --A 3 foot sample of yarn with some or all of the characteristics you'd like is very helpful to us. The sample doesn't have to be made of the same fiber, as your yarn will be. But it is important that you specify exactly what you want or provide a sample with the characteristics that are important to you.

PRICING

Spinning prices are based on the finished weight of the yarn returned to you as 4oz skeins (if possible) and apply to your choice of bulky, worsted, fingering, or sport weight yarns, plus plying, blending, and carding if needed.

Please be aware, if carding is needed to spin your fiber, there may be some loss during the processing. For example, 5 lbs. of clean wool minus 20% will yield approximately 4 pounds of yarn.

Some fibers may need to be blended with wool in order for us to spin it. This is often true with dog fiber. We will add 20% of wool that is similar to your fiber for blending; for example, we will add 20% white Merino wool to white Samoyed dog fiber. You will be charged the fiber blending fee plus the cost of the blending fiber . See our list of available fibers and prices on our online catalog. We will contact you by email or phone before processing your order if we feel that fiber blending is needed.

It is recommended that yarn be washed after spinning in order to set in the twist and to any remaining dirt and grease. We can wash it for you, or you can do it yourself, before using it in your projects.

We reserve the right to return fiber at your expense without processing, if we do not feel that we can process it suitably. We will use your deposit to return your fiber, and refund you the balance.

PAYMENT

We require a $10.00 deposit to start all yarn spinning orders. When processing is complete, we will send you a bill for the balance and the return shipment (less $10.00 deposit). After we receive your payment, we will send you your yarn. If your order is less that $10.00 we will refund the difference to you.

We will accept all major credit cards, Paypal, personal checks, and money orders as payment.

IMPORTANT: For accounts not paid within 30 days of the date on the invoice, there will be a late payment fee of 1.5% per month added to the amount due. Because of our limited storage space, additional storage fees of $5.00 per month may be charged for storing your yarn. Yarn not claimed after 60 days will become the property of The Joy of Handspinning. There is a $15.00 charge for returned checks.

SHIPPING

It is best to ship your fiber to us by UPS or US Priority Mail (with delivery confirmation). Pack the fiber in a plastic bag/s or baggie/s and place it/them inside of the cardboard carton. Fill out The Custom Spinning Order Form and include:

1. Name, address, email address, and phone number, including area code.
2. Number of bags of fiber and their contents.
3. Select the type of yarn you would like to have handspun
4. Include a sample yarn that is at least 3 yards long with each bag of unique fiber
5. Include a $10.00 check or money order with your order as a deposit
